This volume explores strategies and detailed protocols for the preparation of macromolecular complexes and their characterization in view of structural analysis. The chapters in this book are separated into three parts : Part One focuses on sample preparation, and covers strategies for recombinant expression of multiprotein complexes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic hosts, for genome engineering using the CRISPR/Cas9 system and for production of specific binders such as reformatted antibodies and artificial binding proteins. Part Two looks at the biophysical methods that can provide useful indicators for sample optimization, and often complement structural information obtained with core technologies for structure determination-x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy-by quantitative solution data. Part Three discusses the characterization of multiprotein complexes in a cellular environment using the latest technologies and in vivo approaches. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and authoritative, Multiprotein Complexes: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource for structural and molecular biologists who need to prepare multi-components for their applications, and for other scientists working on macromolecular assemblies from other angles that need to know the latest approaches that the field has to offer. The aim of this 2-volume book is to highlight how Sustainability Science approaches can help solve some of the pervasive challenges that Africa faces. The volumes collect a number of local case studies throughout Africa that adopt transdisciplinary and problem-oriented research approaches using methodologies from the natural and the social sciences. These are put into perspective with chapters that introduce key sustainability challenges such using a regional focus. Through this multi-scale and inter/transdisciplinary approach the proposed volume will provide an authoritative source that will pack in a single volume a large amount of information on how Sustainability Science approaches sustainability challenges in African contexts. While there have been general books about sustainability science, none has had a strong African focus. As a result the 2-volume set fills a major gap in the Sustainability Science scholarship.
This volume sets the stage for the series. PartI introduces key sustainability challenges in Africa. Parts II‐III highlights specific case studies related to these challenges from West and Central Africa.

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will have a place in history as one of the major environmental disasters of the early 21st Century. Although scholars and experts will continue to examine the event and its consequences far into the future, Dr. J.C. Jones, a senior lecturer in the Department of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen and a frequently consulted expert during the crisis itself, has prepared a preliminary digital monograph on the 2010 BP oil spill. This e-book provides the lay-reader with an impartial overview of the circumstances leading to the crisis as well as an early analysis of the gulf coast oil spill events. It is available as a free download here.
The text begins with a consideration of the oil leak site, the BP-operated Macondo Prospect off the Louisiana Coast in the Gulf of Mexico. It continues with explanations and analyses of a wide variety of additional topics: the workings of a semisubmersible oil rig such as the Deepwater Horizon, BP’s previous oil exploration and oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, standard drilling operation and cementing procedure, circumstances suspected of leading to the spill, the gas leak and explosion, events on the day of the explosion, crude oil release, and the measures taken to respond to the oil spill.
Each chapter of The 2010 Gulf Coast Oil Spill includes simple explanations of scientific concepts and industry terms, making the subject matter accessible to any reader. Citations for reference and further reading are included at the end of each chapter.

There are many good reasons to promote sustainable development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other combustion emissions. The air quality in many urban environments is causing many premature deaths because of asthma, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and dementia associated with combustion emissions. The global social cost of air pollution is at least $3 trillion/year; particulates, nitrogen oxides and ozone associated with combustion emissions are very costly pollutants. Better air quality in urban environments is one of the reasons for countries to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. There are many potential benefits associated with limiting climate change. In the recent past, the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have been increasing and the number of weather and climate disasters with costs over $1 billion has been increasing. The average global temperature set new record highs in 2014, 2015, and 2016. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the transition to electric vehicles and electricity generation using renewable energy must take place in accord with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. This work reviews progress and identifies some of the health benefits associated with reducing combustion emissions.

This book serves as a core text for university curricula in solid body mechanics and, at the same time, examines the main achievements of state of the art research in the mechanics of elastic and non-elastic materials. This latter goal of the book is achieved through rich bibliographic references, many from the authors’ own work. authors. Distinct from similar texts, there are no claims in this volume to a single universal theory of plasticity. However, solutions are given to some new problems and to the construction of models useful both in pedagogic terms for students and practical terms for professional design engineers. Examples include the authors’ decisions about the Brazilian test, stability of rock exposure, and pile foundations. Designed for both upper-level university students and specialists in the mechanics of deformable hard body, the material in this book serves as a source for numerous topics of course and diploma concentration.

This open access book offers both conceptual and empirical descriptions of how to “frame” sustainability challenges. It defines “framing” in the context of sustainability science as the process of identifying subjects, setting boundaries, and defining problems. The chapters are grouped into two sections: a conceptual section and a case section. The conceptual section introduces readers to theories and concepts that can be used to achieve multiple understandings of sustainability; in turn, the case section highlights different ways of comprehending sustainability for researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders.
The book offers diverse illustrations of what sustainability concepts entail, both conceptually and empirically, and will help readers become aware of the implicit framings in sustainability-related discourses. In the extant literature, sustainability challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and rapid urbanization have largely been treated as “pre-set,” fixed topics, while possible solutions have been discussed intensively. In contrast, this book examines the framings applied to the sustainability challenges themselves, and illustrates the road that led us to the current sustainability discourse.

This textbook explores the working principles of all kinds of turbomachines. The same theoretical framework is used to analyze the different machine types. The order in which the different kinds are treated is chosen by the possibility of gradually building up theoretical concepts. For each of the turbomachine kinds, a balance is sought between fundamental understanding and knowledge of practical aspects. Readers are invited through challenging exercises to consider how the theory applies to particular cases. This textbook appeals to senior undergraduate and graduate students in mechanical engineering and to professional engineers seeking to understand the operation of turbomachines. Readers will gain a fundamental understanding of turbomachines and will be able to make a reasoned choice of a turbomachine for a particular application.
