The "Biology of the Indian ocean" was one of the main topics studied intensively 'durmg the International Indian ocean Expédition 1959-1965. the goal of this expeditionary series was to investigate a largely unknown ocean by means of an interdisciplinary approach. Meteorologists, geologists, physial, chemical and biological oceano-graphers tried to examine in detail the very complicated relations between living creatures in the ocean and their abiotic environment.
This volume contains the proceedmgs of a Symposium held at Kiel University Germany, from 31 March to 6 April, 1971. It provides much new information and some synthesis, ail directed towards an understanding of the functioning and organization of the ecosystem of the Indian ocean.
Vol. 1 in the series, ecological studies, summarized the existing data on some important topics in temperate forest ecosystems. Vol. 2 is a report on thé Solling Project, the German Research association's contribution to the IBP.
