Description :
The creation of an artificial contact through the Suez Canal between two different marine biota is the greatest man-made experiment in marine zoogeography. Instead of leading to an eqi a! and random intermingling of these biota, "Lessepsian Migration', the one-sided invasion of the Mediterranean by a well-defined diversity of Red Sea biota, was the result. The book attempts to explain the reasons for this limitation by presenting the historical and recent oceanography of the two seas, as well as of the waters of the Isthmus of Suez; the inventory of the migrant biota is given on a critical basis and tentative forecasts as to the future fate of the Lessepsian migration are made. In a concluding chapter other interoceanic canals and their biological impact are discussed comparatively.
