Use of proxies in paleoceanography

The book examines methods for reconstruction of the past climate, climate changes and pale-oceanography of the South Atlantic, and the cycling of biochemical components in the ocean. Information reflecting past ocean conditions is provided by so-called pale-oceanographic proxies (parameters which can be employed to approximate unobservable environmental variables, e.g. surface water temperature). The use and development of proxies have been major themes of research projects at the University of Bremen for almost 10 years. In this volume, results related to these proxy studies are summarized. Each article gives an overview of a specific proxy, provides particular findings obtained in the South Atlantic and ends with an outlook on future perspectives with respect to the proxy described. Therefore, it is suitable for lecturers and graduate students of earth sciences and scientists working in the field of climate reconstruction and climate modeling.
